The Honley Samba Band was formed in 2013. Starting with six members and now averaging twenty to thirty the band has grown in reputation, with beginners now traveling from across Kirklees to learn Samba drumming in Honley. We give around a dozen performances a year, which have included the Huddersfield Giants, Tour de France celebration and Holmfirth Picturedrome
This friendly, drumming group wants to hear from anybody aged 10-100 who would like to pick up a Brazilian-style drum, whether you have lots of musical experience or none whatsoever. The weekly two hour sessions are run on Friday evenings at Southgate Theatre. |
about us
Our musical style originates from Brazil but draws influence from all over the world. We play a variety of tunes which range in influence from funk, reggae, traditional samba and modern pieces composed by band members.
The Honley Samba Band are available to bring a sunny Carnival atmosphere to events indoors or outdoors. Samba is the perfect addition to a parade or celebration, requiring no amplification as well as being waterproof! Feel free to contact us for more information about the band. |
The leader
The rehearsals are led by professional community drummer Katie Mallard from Rhythm Stick - www.rhythmstick.co.uk . After joining Arco Iris, the Cambridge Community Samba Band Katie quickly developed a passion for Brazilian beats and proceeded to lead bands including Fruity Clave and Ely Community Samba Band. Katie has now been leading drum workshops for 14 years.
Studying under community musician Tom the Pom Katie has developed a teaching style that is energetic and compassionate, allowing participants to develop their skills in a supportive environment yet really let themselves go to enjoy the rhythms |
about samba

Traditional Samba is carnival music from the streets of Rio and is played with sticks on a variety of instruments ranging from small agogo bells and shakers to huge surdo bass drums. A batteria (samba orchestra) might consist of 10 drummers or 10,000! Samba has a combination of African, Native Indian, Iberian and Brazilian influences so if often regarded to symbolize racial and social harmony.
Listening to music might be enjoyable and stimulating but making music is exciting, motivational, empowering and above all it brings people together.
